Autoresponder Madness Review – Email Marketing Best Practices

Getting your email marketing spot on means you’ll need to learn some email marketing best practices. If you are really serious about making a success online then you need to do one important thing…

You need to build a list.

Read that line again.

If you want to make money online then you'll need to build a well-targeted and responsive opt-in email list.

This in itself can take time and considerable effort but the end result is ALWAYS worth it.

However to be successful at it you need to determine a strategy first! So lets take a look at how to do this.

As with everything thing else you do in marketing – you need to:

Determine Your Audience!

This you should know already. You'll have found this out when you did your demographic research.

What's Your Purpose?

When it comes to email marketing best practices, you ideally should only have one purpose per email. So if you have a series of emails that you want to send, then you need to plan these in advance.

For example, you might want them to check out your website/blog post/article etc. Or you may want them to buy a product or service (yours or someone else's product) . It could be that you are building brand awareness.

You may want to do all of the above. As long as each email only has the ONE purpose, otherwise your message may get lost along the way. Never presume that they will understand what you want them to do.

Tell them exactly what you want them to do. If you want them to subscribe to your newsletter – tell them.

Give them too many things to do at once and the likelihood is they'll do nothing.

Craft Your Message

Your purpose will obviously determine what you write. Your message will come easy if you clearly set out your purpose. This is one of the most important email marketing best practices I can give you!

Define Your Time-line

How many times are you going to send an email to your list? There is no hard and fast rule for this. It will entirely depend on:

  • Your audience
  • Your purpose
  • Time

You need to think about this very clearly. If you are in a B2B niche then these people are very busy and receive loads of emails on a daily basis – are they going to appreciate loads of emails from you? On the other hand if you only send them one every month is that email going to be deleted without even being read?

When it comes to email marketing best practices you also need to think about whether YOU have the time to keep the momentum going. Look at what is it you want to achieve from these emails, look at the content you are going to deliver in them and then draw a time-line for when you are going to send them.

Create A Process And A System

As with most things in business you need to create processes and systems and this is no different. Make things easier on yourself and do the leg work before you start. If you want your emails to have the same look and feel then get yourself a template.

Here are some great sites for free email templates:

Email Marketing Best Practices – Warning #1

*Be careful – not everyone can receive HTML emails, but this has changed over the last few years and most can receive HTML email.

Text emails will always have a better chance of getting through to your prospect/customer but can look unattractive an boring. You have to decide which path to go with.

When you create your systems and processes think about whether you're complying with the CAM SPAM act. Make sure that you make it really easy for them to unsubscribe from your list. If you don't then you could risk violating their terms.

It's also a good idea to use some sort of email software such as AWeber. Using a system like this can eliminate problems that can arise with email marketing. When you compose an email in AWeber it tells you your spam score.

Email Marketing Best Practices – Here’s An Example:

I wrote an autoresponder series for my CBMV2 product.

Email Marketing Best Practices

If you look at the last email I have a spam score of 1.2. Why? Here's why.

Email Marketing Best Practices

As you can see from this screen capture because I mention “dollars” in the body text I get a spam score of 1.2. However it's ok to send because as long as it falls under the score of 5, then it's not classed as spam.

AWeber does more than this as do many other email services out there. I personally use AWeber as I have always found it to be the most reliable with email deliverance.

Email Marketing Best Practices – Warning #2

But, be careful you don't get blacklisted. If that happens you're in all sorts of problems.

If you are accused of sending spam, then you may find your email accounts closed down, your website shut off, and your reputation in tatters. In some parts of the world, you may even be breaking the law.

That's why I prefer to pay for a service that I know works, is simple to use and does the job reliably.

Read the CAM SPAM act and get to know every inch of it.
